Bifurcation Analysis for Surface Waves Generated by Wind

چکیده

We study the generation of surface waves on water as a bifurcation phenomenon. For a critical wind-speed there appear traveling wave solutions. While linear waves do not transport mass (in the mean), nonlinear effects create a shear-flow and result in a net mass transport in the direction of the wind. We derive an asymptotic formula for the average tangential velocity along the free surface. Numerical investigations confirm the appearance of the shear-flow and yield results on the bifurcation picture.

The period - doubling of gravity - capillary waves

In this paper an attempt is made to explain the period-doubling of wind-generated gravity-capillary waves as observed in the experimentofChoi (1977). It is conjectured that period-doubling is closely related to the phenomenon of second-harmonic resonance. In order to obtain a simple dynamical model, results of McGoldrick (1970) and Simmons (1969) are extended to include the effect of wind input...

The relative importance of wind and ship waves in the littoral zone of a large lake

Surface waves and their interactions with sediments and benthic organisms are the main hydrodynamic process affecting littoral ecosystems. Here, we present a long-term data set on surface-wave parameters, which was obtained from the analysis of measurements with a pressure sensor. The data set covers a time period of a year and allows for resolving waves with heights down to less than a centime...

Capillary-gravity and capillary waves generated in a wind wave tank: observations and theories

Short water surface waves generated by wind in a water tunnel have been measured by an optical technique that provides a synoptic picture of the water surface gradient over an area of water surface (Zhang & Cox 1994). These images of the surface gradient can be integrated to recover the shape of the water surface and find the two-dimensional wavenumber spectrum. Waveforms and two-dimensional st...

A CLOSED-FORM NON- LINEAR SOLUTION FOR PLASTIC FLANGE WRINKLING OF CIRCULAR PLATES IN DEEP DRAWING PROCESS

This paper deals with two-dimensional plane stress wrinkling model of a plastic annular plate. Based on energy method and the nonlinearity of strain-displacement law, a bifurcation function in polar coordinates is derived analytically. This technique leads to the critical conditions for the onset of the plastic wrinkling of flange during the deep drawing process. To find this solution, the Tres...

BEM-FDM modeling of water free surface interaction with trapped air in OWC chamber for calculating generated power

Free surface modeling plays an important role in some ocean structures design, especially in Oscillating Water Column (OWC) devices. Boundary element method (BEM) is a suitable method for free surface modeling due to its simplicity, quick solving, and low data storage requirement. In this paper, BEM was used for free surface modeling in OWC chamber and out of it. Linear kinematic and dynamic bo...
